That the Mac has been so easy for musicians and sound
designers to use to make music shouldn’t be a surprise at all. Artists
and producers like Herbie Hancock, KMFDM, and the Dust Brothers benefit
from not only the tight integration of hardware and software and the blazing
fast Power Macintosh G3 RISC processing, but also PC compatibility and
PCI expansion slots. In the hothouse of the music biz machine, Mac-based
performers and producers are more than just surviving: they’re thriving.
Heading East. Nathan East is arguably one of the most sought after bassists on the planet with a discography that would make fans of Adult Contemporary sigh. From Phil Collins, Al Jarreau, and Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Eric Clapton, East is Bassasaurus Rex. And the Mac is unquestioningly, undeniably, irrefutably his thang. Mo’ Beta. The Beta Lounge, conceived and formed in 1993 by five audio kingpins from San Fran, brings the global best of DJ music to the masses via their weekly live internet electronic music showcase. From Barcelona to Tokyo and on from Cologne, founders Zane Vella and Ian Raikow are partying hard like they just don’t care. Slaughter. Triple-platinum recording artists Slaughter, having built a fan base during the hey day of ‘80s metal has managed, against conventional wisdom, to keep them in this post-grunge era of short songs and shorter solos. And Slaughter’s Blas Elias is not only the brains behind the marketing machine, he’s also the band’s rock-solid drummer AND a Mac guru. Uh Oh. It’s
N2O. N8 Shimizu is a well-known fixture in LA’s digital underground
music scene—call it jungle, house, or illbient—Shimizu is the man with
the plan. And he’s not only bad and nationwide, he’s recently gone global
as the man behind Nitrous Oxide Records (N20), a small label with big-label
contacts and distribution contracts. How so? Well, they use Macs, for starts...
Kein Mehrheit Fur Die Mitleid! The Sturm und Drang of techno music at its best, KMFDM’s recent press announcement trumpeted the fact that KMFDM was dead and long live MDFMK. As digital as digital can be, KMFDM/MDFMK’s Sascha digs into the heart and art of music, machines, and Macs. |

Mo’ MIDI. Need a solution to hook your MIDI gear to your iMac or your new PowerMac G3? Well, they’re here (almost). Opcode, Roland, Emagic, Mark of the Unicorn and Midiman have all announced USB MIDI interfaces that will blow you away. Griffin, Keyspan and MegaWolf have also announced multiport PCI serial cards that will support current serial MIDI devices. Rock on. On the Road with Wynonna. Lots of folks play a musical instrument. Fewer play a computer. That’s right. Harry Sharpe is the computer player for Wynonna Judd. Countryfied computing at its best. American
Hot Wax. Ask John DeGaetano, the founder and CEO of AppolloEarbone
Music, to explain the anatomy of sound — how it is we’re able to hear his
music — and he’s likely to tell you it’s because the eardrum’s connected
to the ear bone — and AppolloEarbone’s connected to an iMac. And to the
listening ears of one nation under a groove.
EarBuzz Saw. As a guitarist, singer and songwriter, Don Kimenker lived music. But after experiencing what it was like to be one of many artists on big label, Epic Records, he decided to do his own solo project and put his energy toward starting a site that would help liberate other music artists from the death-like vice-grip of the music industry. And earBuzz was born. Gibson Guitar
God. Jeff Ivester designs dreams… with six strings, fret boards,
and pickups. Jeff Ivester, you see, designs guitars. But even more than
that, as the creative director for Gibson’s Custom, Art and Historic Division,
Jeff designs some of the most unique and sought after guitars on the planet.
Believe the Hype. While commonly considered in some quarters to be the relatively unsophisticated cousin of disco, hip-hop offers up some of the most tech-heavy pop being made today. And Public Enemy has remained at the edge of this edge by making Mac the tool of choice for their running commentary on life in the land of the free. The Soundboy Yakuza Tour. There’s a completely digital experience on tour right now. Electric music veterans, like Kurt Ralske of Ultra Vivid Scene, will team up with newer indie digital musicians like Kid 606 to tour the East Coast and their main machine of mayhem? A Mac. |
